Quality Excellence

Build quality into systems rather than inspecting for it afterwards.

Principles

  • Build Quality In — prevention over detection
  • Test at the appropriate level — most tests should be fast and isolated
  • Automate validation — anything repeatedly validated manually should be automated
  • Quality is a team responsibility — not owned by QA alone

Testing Strategy

→ Testing Pyramid

The three levels: - Unit Tests — fast, isolated, business logic focused - Integration Tests — service and data interactions - End-to-End Tests — critical user journeys, used selectively

Quality Gates

Every PR should pass: - Automated tests - Code quality checks - Security scans - Peer review approval

Branch protection should enforce: - No direct commits to main - Required approvals - Required status checks

Strong Signals

  • Automated validation at every stage
  • Fast feedback loops
  • Low defect escape rate
  • Stable, predictable releases

Weak Signals

  • Frequent regressions
  • Manual testing as primary quality control
  • Customer-reported defects
  • Unpredictable releases
